Joining us on Sunday, January 26, 2025 for a very special session of our Monthly Meets is Prof. Roel Vertegaal, renowned for inventing the foldable phone. He is a visionary leader in the field of human-computer interaction. As the founder of The Human Media Lab, Europe’s premier media laboratory based at Radboud University in Nijmegen, The Netherlands, he has dedicated his career to creating innovative technologies that promote human and environmental well-being.
Prof. Vertegaal is widely celebrated for his groundbreaking contributions to flexible and paper computing, with iconic inventions such as PaperWindows (2004), PaperPhone (2010), and PaperTab (2012). Holding a PhD from the University of Twente, he has consistently been at the forefront of futuristic technologies.
In his talk, Prof. Vertegaal will explore cutting-edge advancements in areas such as Organic User Interfaces, Eye-Controlled Personas, Holographic Teleconferencing, Interactive Drone Swarms, and Neuromorphic Human-Computer Interaction, offering a glimpse into the future of technology.

About the speaker:
Roel Vertegaal is a Dutch professor, interaction designer and electronic musician. He is the founder of The Human Media Lab - Europe’s premier media laboratory. Centrally located at Radboud University in Nijmegen, The Netherlands, its mandate is to develop new ways of working with computers that enhance human and environmental well-being.
He is best known for his pioneering work on flexible and paper computers,[1] with systems such as PaperWindows (2004),[2] PaperPhone (2010)[3] and PaperTab (2012).[4] He holds a PhD from University of TenteRoel invented many of today’s modern mobile interaction techniques, such as the flexible and foldable smartphone (Huawei Mate X and Galaxy Fold), attention-aware interactions (Apple iPhone and iPad, Google Hub), light field smartphones and full body video conferencing as well as interactive drone swarms (Flying LEGO).
Roel authored over 150 refereed scientific articles, books and patents (h-index 48, 10K+ citations). Roel was awarded the ACM SIGCHI Academy Award and his work features widely in the popular press, from Scientific American to CNN.
