Title: Hardware Attacks and Their Implications on the Reliability of Digital Evidence and Expert Testimony
This talk explores the detection of covert devices that impersonate trusted human interface devices (HIDs) such as keyboards and mice. These devices can be exploited to execute unauthorised commands undetected, posing significant risks in digital investigations. Raising awareness of this threat is critical to ensuring that forensic analysts and legal professionals do not overlook key evidence, thereby helping to prevent miscarriages of justice.
To address this gap in digital forensic practice, the REVCONBACK framework was developed to support more rigorous analysis in cases involving HID-based attacks. The framework encourages analysts to consider alternative interpretations before forming conclusions, improving the reliability and accuracy of forensic outcomes. Validation through case scenarios demonstrated enhanced decision-making and reduced error rates when the framework was applied.
